AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Round 8 Recap - Indy Mile

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 21, 2013) - The 2013 running of the Indy Mile, Round 8 on the AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles calendar, was another astounding display of pure domination by Bryan Smith (Crosley Radio/Kawasaki). Smith's victory on the legendary circuit located at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Ind. makes him two-for-two when competing on mile-long circuits this season.

"This is just unbelievable," said Smith, who hails from Flint, Mich. "I've been racing here since I was 10 years old and now I'm one of the older guys. I probably have more laps logged than anybody here and it just feels great to get this win. This place is extra special to me for a lot of reasons. The fact that I'm part of the Howerton family just adds to all of this excitement. Everyone that's a part of my team is absolutely awesome and I couldn't take any of this credit without including them."

Smith got the holeshot from pole position to start the 25-lap Grand National Expert main event and once the veteran got out front, his lead was never in doubt. In fact, Smith would go on to increase the margin of his lead with every lap that passed, eventually winning by 5.12 seconds over second-place finisher and Oxford, Penn. product Brandon Robinson (TJ Burnett Farms/Kawasaki). With the win, Smith now sits second in both the Grand National Championship Combined and GNC Expert Twins point standings, trailing only Eatonville, Washington's Brad Baker (Dodge Bros Racing/Harley-Davidson) in both categories.

Robinson's impressive come-from-behind second-place effort at the Indy Mile could prove to be a huge momentum boost for the young rider. Robinson started the season off strong, leading the Grand National Championship points chase after the Daytona doubleheader, but has had a shaky season since then marred by poor results at Hagerstown and Peoria. He looked strong at Indy however, as he outdueled Jared Mees, Brad Baker and JD Beach (TJ Burnett Farms/Kawasaki) in the race's final laps, topping the four-rider pack that was vying for a runner-up result by a scant .040 of a second.

With the final podium position up for grabs, and with less than a quarter of a second separating them, it was Baker who came through with a third-place performance. Clio, Mich.'s Mees and Philpot, Ky.'s Beach were forced to settle with fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively.

Baker's podium appearance marks his sixth of the 2013 AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles season and the 20-year-old has a very comfortable lead in both the Grand National Championship and Grand National Expert point standings.

After coming off his ninth-consecutive Peoria TT win, Henry Wiles (Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/Harley-Davidson) was forced to unload his twin-cylinder machine at Indy. The Winn, Mich. native would go on to finish seventh in the main event and currently sits third in the Grand National Championship point standings.

Jake Johnson (Lloyd Brothers Motorsports/Ducati) made his debut with his new team last weekend at the Indy Mile and earned an 11th place finish. The Coatesville, Penn. native parted ways with Zanotti Racing several weeks ago and recently inked a deal with Lloyd Brothers Motorsports, the same team that has successfully fielded Wiles for many years. It will be interesting to see how Johnson performs with his new ride as he's gotten off to an uncharacteristically slow start so far in 2013.

AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles

Shayna Texter (Crosley Radio/Honda) followed in teammate Bryan Smith's footsteps as she too won her second mile-long race of the 2013 season with Saturday night's victory in the 16-lap AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles main event at the Indy Mile. Texter, who hails from Willow Street, Penn., passed defending class champion and Davison, Mich. product Stephen Vanderkuur (Parkinson Brothers Racing/Honda) on lap nine and never looked back from there. With the win, Texter lifted her ranking to sixth in the J&P Pro Singles point standings.

Even though Vanderkuur surrendered the lead and let his first win of the season slip from his grasp late in the race, he helped himself tremendously in the points with a second place effort as he now sits fourth in the standings. After a slow start to 2013, Vanderkuur needs to be just about perfect from here on out if he wants to give himself a chance to defend his title.

Cody Johncox (Sunnyside Cycle/Yamaha) earned his best main event finish to date this season with his third-place result. Brisbane, California's Dominic Colindres (Motorcycle Superstore/Honda) bounced back after a tough 17th-place result at Peoria with a fourth-place effort at the Indy Mile.

Current AMA Pro J&P Cycles Pro Singles points leader and Mead, Wash. product Wyatt Maguire finished fifth to round out the top five.
