AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles Rounds 1 & 2 Recap: DAYTONA Flat Track

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 21, 2014) - Every year, the AMA Pro Flat Track Pro Singles lineup is made up of young up-and-coming riders in the early stages of their careers, hungry for immediate success, and determined to make a name for themselves at Daytona.

Last weekend's opening rounds at DAYTONA Flat Track in Daytona Beach, Fla. saw two riders each claim their first career wins at the professional level. Albion, New York's Ryan Wells (KTM/KTM) earned the Round 1 main event victory while Aurora, Indiana's Brandon Wilhelm (Wilhelm Racing/Honda) took home the second major checkered flag of the weekend.

The win had to be extra sweet for Wells, who came up just short of the AMA Pro Singles Championship last season, losing out to Wyatt Maguire by a single point in the standings. Picture that; Wells almost won the title outright in 2013 without even posting a single victory all season long. Now with already one win under his belt to begin the 2014 season and former arch-rival Maguire having graduated to the Grand National ranks this year, the door is wide open for Wells as he appears to be the clear-cut favorite to claim the coveted AMA Pro Singles Championship at season's end.

Holley, New York's Justin Jones (Jones Racing/Honda) quietly had a strong opening weekend at Daytona. The second-year rider found himself on the podium following both main events as he finished second in the first one and third in the second one.

When asked about his career-best second-place performance, Jones stated "I just thought about trying to get a solid start to the race. I was able to get a pretty decent start and even though I wasn't able to catch Ryan (Wells) I still managed to ride my own race and slide into that second position where I finished."

Warren, Oregon's Davis Fisher (TJ Burnett Farms/Honda) followed his ninth place Round 1 main event finish up with an impressive Round 2 runner-up performance in Friday night's finale. In just his first professional season, Fisher will leave Daytona in fourth place in the points.

San Martin, California's Rodney Spencer Jr.'s (GP Sports/Honda) fourth and ninth place finishes to begin the season at Daytona will put him at fifth in the AMA Pro Singles championship point standings.

Simi Valley, California's Dylan Morin (Kawasaki of Simi Valley/Kawasaki) turned the fastest qualifying lap during Round 1 and finished 12th and 6th in the main events and leaves Daytona with a ninth place position in the points in just his second year as a pro.
