AMA Pro Flat Track Round 2 - Springfield Mile Less Than One Month Away

Written by Andrew Swain:

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 29, 2014) – It wouldn’t be a complete season if AMA Pro Flat Track didn’t visit Springfield, Ill. The legendary Springfield Mile has served as one of the most iconic venues and is considered to be one of the most coveted wins on the circuit. When the fire-breathing twins roll off the trucks at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in less than a month from now on May 25, 2014, this go-around is sure to add even more excitement to the legacy of the storied event.

The weekend will mark the first of three scheduled events in 2014 that the AMA Pro Twins will run instead of the Pro Singles class.

After leaving the season opening doubleheader at Daytona with two top-five finishes, Sammy Halbert remains atop the Grand National Championship leaderboard with 42 points to his credit. Per usual, Halbert is entered to compete in the Springfield Mile aboard a Harley-Davidson.

Halbert claimed the heavily sought-after No. 1 plate in 2009 after winning the overall championship and has had fairly decent success at Springfield throughout his career. He missed last year’s action at the Midwest venue due to injury so you can bet he’ll be extra motivated to succeed this go-around.

Zanotti Racing competitor Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. heads into Springfield with loads of confidence, as he’ll be coming fresh off a Daytona Round 2 victory. Coolbeth’s third position in the overall points could be even higher had he not crashed in the Race 1 main event and finish 17th. Look for Coolbeth, mounted on his Harley-Davidson to finish strong at the first running of the Springfield Mile next month.

Defending Grand National Champion Brad Baker will look to rebound after a rough Daytona effort. Baker wrecked twice at Daytona which caused him to fall back to 16th in the points. Baker recently had successful surgery on his broken left arm, an injury he sustained while riding at Colin Edwards’ Texas Tornado Boot Camp. Baker insists he will be ready to go for Springfield.

Jake Johnson showed some resurgence at Daytona during the season opening rounds, finishing 10th and second in the first two main events. Johnson, now riding for Lloyd Brothers Motorsports, is second in the overall points and looks poised for another championship caliber year.

The stars of the series roll in to Springfield, Ill. on May 25, 2014. One of the fastest and most intense races on the annual calendar, the Springfield Mile always draws enormous crowds.
