Calistoga Racing Action Promises to be Fast and Furious
CALISTOGA, Calif. (Sept. 23, 2011) - The next to the last race in the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship, presented by Harley-Davidson Insurance, a lot will be on the line when America’s top racers take to the track in an all out battle for points and glory.
Last year at the inaugural Calistoga Half-Mile, Steven Bonsey of Salinas, Calif., earned top honors in the Grand National Twins Main, with Sammy Halbert coming in 2nd, followed by Jake Johnson, Chris Carr and Jared Mees. In the Pro Singles Main, Brad Baker took first place. This year, all the top riders are planning a different scenario.
With 17 out of 20 events completed, the points are extremely close. For the first time in 2011, Halbert -- who clinched the 2011 Expert Singles Championship at Round 15 -- has been forced to surrender his lead in the combined Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship. Mees now holds the lead by a mere four points. So far, both Mees and Halbert have taken 4 wins each. Mees, who hails from Pennsylvania, earned the Number 1 plate in 2009 and would like nothing better than to add the 2011 Championship to his list of credits. However, Halbert, a native of Washington, is also determined to end the year with the crown.
Jake Johnson, who took a 2nd place at the last event in Knoxville, is also within striking distance. Sitting 9 points off the lead, Johnson, the reigning champion would like nothing better than to take home the Number One plate for the second year in a row.
There is nothing in two-wheeled racing that matches the spectacle of AMA Pro Flat Track competition. Fans will be in awe from beginning to end as they watch riders fly around the Calistoga Half-Mile, pitching their bikes sideways and sliding through the turns. There is no such thing as pacing in this type of racing…it is all or nothing…with only one rider emerging as the winner.
Back by popular demand will be the “Motorcycle Show at the Races”. Last year’s inaugural show was amazing with so many cool and rare motorcycles and so many racing stars! This year we are going to surpass that, moving the bar even higher. Do not hesitate to enter your motorcycles, each bike gets a collector participation ribbon and awards are open in each class. Just go to www.calistogaflattrack.com for an entry form.
Another special highlight will be an autograph signing session with our Grand Marshalls and many other racing legends: Featuring Bruce Brown of On Any Sunday fame, the 1969 #1 plate title holder and the co-star of “On Any Sunday”, Mert Lawwill; and featured rider of “On Any Sunday” and winner of 12 AMA Grand Nationals Jim Rice.
The Legendary Grand Marshalls will again be autographing the events special collectable Legends Poster, available for a small donation to the “riders travel fund”, along with all the other riding celebrities, many of who are well known and in the AMA Hall of Fame.
