Jared Mees Report - Midland and Bulls Gap
BULLS GAP, Tenn. (June 25, 2009) - This year at Bulls Gap the pit area was messed up. We had to unload the truck at the top of the race track, take everything down across the track and set up inside the oval. The track is way too small to pit down there, not to mention there was no way we were going to get down there in the big haulers. So that was a kind of a cluster. The track itself was a little different than in 2007, the last time a National was held here. I did not remember it being so banked.
Practice went well, I ended up 3rd overall. I had a tough Heat race: Kenny Coolbeth, Shaun Russell, Chris Carr, and Brandan Bergen among others. I got off the line in second and dove down underneath Coolbeth for the lead, and led the rest of the Heat race, earning the fastest time.
I was on the pole for the Dash, and picked the inside. It was a tough spot and I did not get a good start. I was 4th off of turn 2, came off of turn 4 and got by Smith with a little aggression. With a five-lap race it is tough to do much and I ended up 3rd. We had made a change before the Dash and it turned out to be the wrong way to go. So we made a couple of changes for the Main and I was ready. I would have first pick on the line.
During the Pro Main we had a rain downpour. When it stopped the track crew did a good job at running it in. It made the track smoother, faster and more racy. I picked the middle of the track this time. I still did not get the hole shot, but was able to roll around and was in third, got around Kenny and set out after Sammy Halbert. I got by him and started to make some good lines work for me, hitting my marks. Then there was a red flag when AJ Eslick went down. We had to re-line for a staggered start. Brent Armbruster, my mechanic, pointed out to me my strong spots and weak spots. I got off the restart well and was leading it for a few laps before Sammy started to come up inside of me. We started passing each other every lap straight for about 8 laps, running into each other off of turn 2, slamming and jamming back and forth. With 4 laps to go I spun it up badly and dropped back and Sammy had it from there. I finished 2nd with Coolbeth right on me for 3rd. Sammy ran a great race, it was a lot of fun, very aggressive, but when you are going for GNC wins that is how you have to ride sometimes. Sammy deserved it! I learned a few things and will move on to the next round.
Next up is Lima OH. I can't wait. Thanks to everyone once again. Jammin' Jared Mees, # 21.
