Martin: Peoria TT Report

Hey everyone! This last weekend was in Peoria, Ill. It was a TT and that's my favorite kind of track. I was coming into this race with some kind of cold, and had been sick for a few days before the race, but was excited for another TT. My first practice felt good, thanks to Chris Carr's input. I felt like I knew the track before going out. It was my first time on the Peoria TT, so I took it easy to get to know the track and find the lines. We changed the gearing to see if I could gain some traction before the next practice. The next practice was a qualifying one and I knew that I needed to push harder every lap to get a good time. I just wasn’t riding to my full capability being sick and having no energy or strength, but I tried to push myself and not think about it. I just wasn't getting fast times and ended up missing the front row for the heat. I knew what I needed to do to make the main. I was in the first heat race and starting on the third row.

We get ready, light goes green and I get a bad start. I started picking riders off each lap, but ran out of time. By the last lap, I found myself in 11th. I was trying hard, but I just couldn’t get it. Now I have to qualify in the semi. I was in the first semi and starting on the second row. We line up, the light goes green, and I get a great start. I’m in second into the first corner. The track was really slippery, but I was pressuring the rider in front of me. On the last lap, I was right on his rear wheel and he made a mistake in turn one. I slipped right by him for the win. I was so happy. I gained my confidence back and was ready for the main.

We made some changes to the bike before the main. The horn goes off and we walk out to the line. I’m starting on the third row again. The light goes green and I get an okay start. I was in about 15th and started picking riders off and was pushing hard, but the track was getting slippery. I was spinning a lot and not gaining positions. I was in 11th and trying to find new lines, but ended up staying in 11th and was thankful for making the main and having the opportunity to race in Peoria.
