Mees: Lima Report
The first practice went well, I was 3rd but felt like I was going well. In the first qualifying I was 4th fastest and in the next round I was 6th. The track was getting slower but I still felt fast and comfortable. I was in the third Heat race with Chris Carr, Coolbeth, Nichole Cheza and Shaun Russell among others. Nichole ripped the start and was leading us coming out of turn 2. I sent it into turn 3 around her outside and came out of turn 4 with her coming up the inside with the lead again! She was riding very well and kept us honest. Carr got by the both of us and I finally got by Nichole to be a steady 2nd, a half straight down from Carr. He was really riding well at Lima.
Next up was the Dash for Cash. I made a couple of small changes to the bike, ran out of time, and was out there. I ripped the hole shot and led the first two laps. Then Carr got by, then Sammy Halbert and Don Taylor. I got by them coming off of turn 2 but they got me back in 3 and 4. I ended up 4th in the Dash. I was a little bummed because I felt I made some mistakes. It was a real close race and the fans were on their feet!
For the Main Event, Steve Beattie came over and did some tuning with my mechanic, Brent Armbruster. They set the bike up old-school cushion-style way. I didn't know really what to expect because it was a little different than my usually winning set-up. But I figured we were out of the hunt earlier in the day for a win, so let's try to make this thing better. When we went out to the starting line we got to pick our spots, of course. I took the same spot as in the Dash and ripped the hole shot again off the bottom. I went into turn 3 and it felt good. The real test was going into turn 1 and I sent it in there and--bang--right away I knew the bike was night and day better. The motorcycle was awesome. I made some good laps and Carr came up to hound me. I knew he was going to be fast early. I figured if I could just stay with him, the track would come to me and all the ice racing I have been doing in the winter time would pay off. Also, my conditioning level is very good right now. Sure enough, I was able to run him back down and put a good pass on him.
I saw Bryan Smith just starting to come up as well, and I wanted to get out of this mess. I started to check out, as I looked back a few times and had a straight away lead. I hooked my foot two laps in a row going into turn 3 and the third time I hooked my foot I just about went over the handlebars up to the hay bales. Smith then closed the gap big on me and I went into a little defense mode of riding. We went back and forth the last 5 laps of the race. On the last lap he led it going into turn 1 and I drifted up into his line and tried a block pass on him He ended up coming off of turn 2 with the lead, but I had such a good run on him coming alongside of him that we went into turn 3 like it was a big half mile ice race, wide open, waiting for one of us to shut off. We ran it in deep and I went a little deeper to give him a bump that upset the both of us and that allowed him to gather it up quicker and get the lead off of turn 4.
Bryan won the race with me 2nd a bike-length behind. It was a good fun race, I just came up a little short at the end again. I felt if I hadn't had that big bobble in turn 3 it would have been a different story. I knew Smith was finding some good lines behind me, trying different stuff. With the distance I had, I think I may have been ok, but with a mistake like I made and the speed Smith had, I was again just a little short.
I did take over the points lead, which was a big goal as well. But there is still a lot of racing to go. I'm gonna keep looking forward as we charge on to Hagerstown Md. July 25th.
Thank you to all of the people behind me. Jammin' Jared Mees # 21.
