Mees the man to beat coming into the AMA Pro Flat Track season finale at Pomona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2014) – The 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track season has seen a bit of everything, from runaway efforts to super tight finishes, emerging young stars and seasoned veterans, new rules and classic edge-of-your-seat action.

But one thing has remained a constant in a wild year – Jared Mees.

The Michigan resident has been spectacularly consistent. From short tracks, to TT (Tourist Trophy) events, half-miles and miles, every surface, every stop, the No. 9 Rogers Racing Harley-Davidson pilot has been one of the riders to beat.

Mees has been on the podium nine times in 14 races and he’s finished outside the top five just once.

It comes as no surprise that Mees will try to wrap up 2014 with his second career Grand National Championship title Saturday at the Flat Track Finals at the LA County Fairplex in Pomona, Calif. On-track action is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT (6 p.m. ET) with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. PT (9:30 p.m. ET) and Mees’ Expert main scheduled for a 9:30 p.m. PT (12:30 a.m. ET) start. Fans can tune in and watch it all live in high definition at FansChoice.tv.

Mees enters the season finale with a 13-point lead over Bryan Smith and his No. 42 Villa-Esparza/Crosley Radio Kawasaki. A finish of second or better would assure Mees the title, but the situation will remain fluid as the day progresses with points on the line in the Dash for Cash and for the leader of the most laps in the main.

Mees, however, isn’t focused on the championship.

“I want to win this last race at Pomona more than anything,” Mees said. “I always want to win the last race.”

Mees is the owner of two victories this season, having taken the checkered flag first at the Lima Half-Mile and the Grays Harbor Half-Mile. He, however, hasn’t won at Pomona since the series’ return to the track in 2009. Mees was forth last year, eighth in 2012, fifth in 2011 and fifth in 2009.

Mees also isn’t looking back on what’s happened in the past, he’s been focused on what he can do to put himself in the best position to claim the title.

“I think our shot is as good as anybody’s,” Mees said. “Especially late in the race, that’s when we get going, I’m in really good shape.”

Part of focusing on what he can control includes not thinking about Smith and trying to figure out the point standings while he’s sliding around the corners.

“I’m not going to be looking around, worrying about him, that’s for sure,” Mees said.

Mees and Smith aren’t just close on the track – they’ve finished within two spots of each other seven times this year – but they’re also good friends away from racing.

“It’s been a lot of fun racing a lot with Bryan, being a good friend of mine,” Mees said. “Even Jake Johnson, we’re all really tight. It definitely makes for a fun rivalry between us.”

Johnson is the only other rider with a shot at the Expert title. The Pennsylvanian and pilot of the No. 5 Ramspur Winery machine is three points in back of Smith and could apply some pressure with a victory.

The Flat Track Finals will go a long way to finally answer some big questions about the 2014 AMA Pro Flat Track Season, but Mees’ consistency has never been in question. Now it’s time for him to translate that to a Grand National Championship.
