Mikey Avilia: Taking Over the Lead in Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles

Hi Everyone—

After several weeks off, finally it was time to head out to Springfield and do more work! It was a long 26 hour drive from Cali to Illinois. Saturday I got to the track early and got in line for the TT. And no sooner than we got everything unloaded and the EZ-up, up it started pouring down rain. It lightened up a bit, but moments later it came down even harder. The pits were literally flooded and we all knew there was no possible way the race was gonna get off that day. So we went back to the hotel and waited for the storm to pass and unloaded out in the parking lot and got the mile bike all set up for Sunday. Woke up once again early and headed to the track and once again the race day was threatened by the weather. There was a Huge storm that just barely missed us to the North. And after a several hour delay we got onto the track for practice and qualy. The track was really tack, and rough and fast! It made for very sketchy racing conditions. I ended up 18th in final qualifying which put me on the back row for my heat. I got a great jump on the outside and railed around the field and was in 4th down the back stretch but fell back to 7th at the finish. We made some changes to the bike and the changing track for the main. I was lined up in the same exact spot in the main as I was in the heat. I got another great start and was in the lead pack for the entire race. I pushed really hard towards the beggining of the race and right at the end my high line went away and fell back to 8th at the finish. It was a little frustraiting to me that I had made minor mistakes that were so costly to my result, but I learned a lot and I'll definetly use it for the next mile.

Monday was the rain date for the TT and after my win in Salinas I had a lot of confidence going into this event. The track was pretty fun and challenging and we got the bike figured out but a little too late and ended up 12th in timed practice. I'm starting to realize I'm not a very good qualifer but more of a racer. But I guess that's a good thing cuz that's what counts! I checked out in my hear and won by over 4 seconds. I was really stoked about that and in the main I knew I was going to have my hands full with Will Cato who has proven to be strong on these types of tracks. I was third off the line and the track was deep and tacky but my setup was for dry and slick so in the first couple laps my bike wasn't working the best. But after a couple red flags the track had dried out and the setup came in strong! A couple riders in front of me fell and I capitalized and found myself in second behind Mikey Martin with 6 or so to go. He gapped me quite a bit but the more laps that went on the stronger I came on and made a pass going into the right hander and took the lead with one to go and pulled off the win!

It felt awesome to win at Springfield and to regain the points lead! I'm in Wisconsin this week for the Dairyland Classic should be a good time and a chance to make some cash!
