Mikey Martin Race Report: Knoxville Half Mile

Hey everyone,

Here is our race report from the Knoxville, Iowa Half Mile. This was probably the fastest half mile Ive ever been on. It was my first time on this track other then walking across it in the mud last year when we got rained out.

My day started off a little rocky, we couldn’t figure out the gearing throughout the whole day. The first round of qualifying I felt really fast but something wasn’t right. I qualified fourteenth in the first session. We made some changes and gave it another go. I ran a wore down tire on the last session to see if I could hook up better, but it was too slippery; we had made a bad choice and new we should have gone to a new tire.

In overall qualifying I ended up twenty-seventh, by far the worst I’ve ever qualified. That means third row starting grid position in the heat race. I knew I had to work ten-times harder to get to the front. I got a great start and worked my way up to finish sixth. That gave me a direct transfer to the main event on the second row on the outside.

Right before the main, Dick (my mechanic) changed the gearing again and was hopeful we had made the right choice. I came from the second row and passed five riders on the outside coming out of turn four. On the first lap I found myself in fourth, and that is where I finished. I almost made a last lap pass for third place, but could not make it stick.

It was just a crazy day.... I worked as hard as I could which made it a great ending to a very challenging day. My fourth place finish added a few more points to our series lead with three rounds to go.

The next race is North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minnesota this will be the last round in the Mid-West before traveling back to the West Coast for the last two rounds.
