Race Report - Jared Mees- Indy Mile
(August 22, 2012) - The Indy Mile is turning into the biggest race of the year! The hype from the Moto GP is attracting more people to the Flat Track Series world.
The track got at lot of water from all the rain early in the week, making it look like it was going to be really good. During the Practice session all of the track was great, wide open. But it got dryer and dryer and started to form a groove at the bottom of the track.
In my Heat race I was stuck with all the Kawasakis. I ended up 4th in the Heat, not where I wanted to be. I dislike racing against the Kawasakis as they are so fast down the straight-a-ways and slower than all the other makes in the corners. In my opinion it makes it tougher to race each other safely when that is going on. Also when you get more than one Kawasaki rider to deal with, it is very difficult to get around them.
For the Main Event, Brent Armbruster my mechanic, and Team owner Craig Rogers made a smart choice on gearing and some jetting. I came off the second row with a decent start, but was quickly run around on the outside in turns 3 and 4. I was about 7th coming up through. I got by Stevie Bonsey and was trying to get by Brandon Robinson. We actually were helping each other trying to catch the lead pack, waving each other by and drafting each other cleanly. We had just come up to the leaders when Jake Johnson went down. On the re-start I was able to grab the holeshot and was leading the race. It was short-lived as Bryan Smith went sailing by me so fast I thought my shield was going to rip off. I was all over the back of Bryan when all of a sudden something happened to his bike, and I almost ran right into him, half expecting to see a red flag, but everyone got through safely. We went back and forth with Robinson, Sam Halbert, and Brad Baker snuck in there once in a while. With 5 laps to go Halbert got by Robinson quickly but I was not able to do so, ending in 3rd place. From how we had started the day and the beginning of the Main, we were happy with that.
After getting double deuces at the Castle Rock and Peoria National Rounds, I now hold a 21 point lead over Sam Halbert as Jake Johnson was unable to make the re-start, pushing him into third spot in the Combined Points for the Series Championship.
