Upcoming AMA Pro Flat Track Springfield Mile Event Weekend Full of Racing Action

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 31, 2009) - Springfield is considered by many to be the Mecca of the American motorcycle sport of dirt track racing. It is one of the most historic and prolific venues on the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship schedule, with history dating back to 1937 when the first AMA Class C National Championship was held on The Springfield Mile. Until the 1954 running of the event, riders that won "The Mile" were rewarded with the most coveted prize in flat track competition, the National Champion's No. 1 plate. This Labor Day Weekend, the legend of Springfield continues as Toyota Trucks and the IMDA present three exciting days of Flat Track racing.

The action starts on Friday, September 4, with the AMA Amateur Short Track. The stars of tomorrow get their chance to race on a track built and prepared for the best in the business. This year, the riders on the 50cc bikes that take to the track on Friday night will be invited back for a special race on Saturday night. The event will also provide a unique experience for the many fans that have yet to see the young riders in action.

Saturday night, September 5, fans will get a chance to experience the rough and tumble action of AMA Pro GNC Short Track racing. On Sunday, September 6, the rolling thunder show moves to the track that made Springfield famous, the lightning fast, "The Mile."

Ralph White, winner of the 1965 Springfield Mile, will return to be honored as Grand Marshal of the event. White will be available for autographs throughout the weekend and will even take one more lap around the circuit.

The Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois, has hosted more Grand National Championship races than any other venue in the history of the sport, with 102 Nationals taking place at the prestigious Fairgrounds. Not only does it offer a rich tradition in Flat Track racing, but Springfield has also hosted a variety of racing disciplines. Springfield offers more than 83 mile races, 10 short tracks and 9 TT races.

The entire weekend of racing is sponsored by Toyota Trucks, Green Toyota, K&N, Memphis Shades, and Miller, the official beer of the Springfield Mile. For tickets and information call the IMDA office at (217)753-8866 or www.illinoismda.com.
