ANAMOSA, Iowa (Aug. 12) - A bike failure in his Heat race made things interesting for Henry Wiles at this year's Peoria TT. Hopping on his backup bike, he made the main event by way of a semi, but that meant he would have to start in the back row of the Grand National.

Even with that handicap, the rider from the aptly named town of Winn, Mich., blazed through the 18-bike field and made his way to the front by lap 10 of 25 and then pulled away to a record ninth straight victory at the prestigious Peoria TT, the seventh AMA Pro Flat Track Series presented by J&P Cycles event of the year.

"It's an amazing feeling to get nine straight wins here at Peoria," said Wiles, who raced a Don's Kawasaki-sponsored KX450F to the victory. "This track has been really good to me over the years, but I was thinking, 'Not good,' when I realized I was going to have to start from the back row. I was sweating it a little bit, but once I broke through to the top five and realized the pace the leaders were setting, I was pretty confident I could get to the front."

Wiles' nine straight wins breaks a record set by the legendary, multi-time AMA Grand National champion Chris Carr, who still owns the record of 13 career wins at Peoria TT. Carr was on hand to watch Sunday's race.

Shaun Russell, who had not raced a national in more than a year, returned with an amazing early run, leading the first three laps of the race. Briar Bauman then held the lead for two laps before succumbing to Brad Baker.

Baker, the series leader, held on for four laps before Wiles caught him on lap 10 going into Turn 1. After an inside pass for the lead, Wiles was gone and won the race over Baker by 3.317 seconds. Road racer JD Beach turned in his best Peoria finish with a third-place effort.

The runner-up finish combined with his win in the Dash earned Baker the 2013 AMA Pro Grand National Expert Singles Championship by just two points over Wiles.

Baker and Wiles are also one and two in the overall Grand National standings (135 to 106 points). Bryan Smith, who finished 10th, is now third with 93. Smith figures to be the rider to beat in the next five rounds, all of which are on Miles and could make the championship battle very interesting coming down the home stretch.

Rodney Spencer Jr. won the Pro Singles final, which was red-flagged twice. Spencer held off Dan Bromley's amazing charge through the field after Bromley crashed early on while leading the race and had to start from the back. Bromley made a mad dash through traffic on the hard-to-pass track to finish second after apparently suffering a broken pinky on his left hand and broken thumb on his right in the crash.

With his victory Spencer moved up to third in the Pro Singles standings with 80 points. Wyatt Maguire and Ryan Wells are tied atop the class standings with 93 each.

The J&P Cycles Grand National Championship moves to the Indy Mile on Aug. 17 in Indianapolis.
